Obituary for Cecile Zo’obo Ango

Written by Danielle & Ivan

Our mother Cecile Zo’obo Ango was born in Douala, Cameroon, to two parents who loved her deeply and believed fiercely in her potential. They worked hard to put her through school and supported her every step as she pursued a life of purpose and possibility. And she rewarded their hard work by always believing in herself, and her ability to succeed and live a joyous life. That same drive and devotion became the foundation of how she raised my brother Ivan and me.

God does not give people more than they can handle, and the life my mother lived was one that only she could have handled with grace, resilience, and an unwavering confidence that everything would work out. In Cameroon, she sold food outside of schools, taught math, and worked hard to make ends meet and to give us a chance at something better. She discreetly applied for an American visa, and instead of boasting of her departure, she carried her papers everywhere she went, as confirmation that her story had only just begun. When she came to America, she carried that same determination with her. She worked at Au Bon Pain, cared for children as a babysitter, served as a health aide, and eventually found her place at Children’s Hospital Center, where she worked with pride for more than a decade until the end of her life.

Our mother battled cancer for years—surgery after surgery, clinical trials, treatments that bought her time but never brought her relief. And yet, she stayed positive, hopeful, and full of light. Her smile could lift the heaviness out of any room, and her spirit was deserving of every good thing this world had to offer. Throughout her sickness, our mother never lost faith that her friends and family would be there to support her, uplift her, and remind her that she was never alone. Those who knew her understood that she carried a quiet confidence—one that was never boastful or envious, but rooted in the deep, steady knowledge that she was enough and that she was more than her illness. I am profoundly grateful for the people who brought her joy, for the friends who called to check on her, who visited her in the hospital and at home, and who surrounded her with love when she needed it most.

As we prepare to lay her to rest, I want her to know this: Mom, your legacy lives on through me and through Zouzou. The grandeur of your life will not be measured by what you had, but by the love you gave and the love you inspired in others. You were extraordinary. You were cherished. And you will be loved for the rest of our lives.
